Our aim is to increase the participation rate in school sports for boys and girls across the academy to help improve our children’s health and fitness, their understanding of sport, team work, and citizenship.
We are creating a learning environment within PE and sports at Turnham where children can confidently express themselves in a constructive and positive way to become the best performers that they can be.
Collectively our P.E teaching team deliver PE lessons to children from Nursery to Year 6 and all lessons are challenging and inclusive covering a range of sports and technical skills across the academic year. As part of our P.E provision, we provide targeted support to our children by working with them closely in small groups allowing them to access new skills and strengths through our occupational therapy programme.
We offer a wide range of sporting clubs that take place throughout the week including breakfast and after school. Our breakfast club is designed to encourage children to come to school early in preparation for the day ahead. Providing a good start to the day with healthy food choices and morning sports and games. After school clubs are an opportunity for children to engage further in extracurricular activities and improve physical development and team skills.
At Turnham Academy we are extremely proactive with our school sports opportunities and competitions. We have successfully competed in the Lewisham school sports in a variety of different events. We have arranged friendly fixtures with our neighbouring schools and schools within our Academy Trust in sports such as basketball and hockey. We have working partnerships with Girls United and Millwall FC. As part of our school sports programme, we offer football development training providing children with the skills and knowledge to confidently compete against other local schools in the Primary Football League. We travel to our events and fixtures in our school minibus.
Turnham Academy continues to work closely with other Schools within the STEP Academy Trust, through termly meetings and organising inter-academy fixtures and tournaments, all Academy staff strive to work together in partnership to deliver excellence in P.E and School Sport.
